In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 8,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of 5-hour ENERGY Drink Grape
When opened, a strong, artificial grape aroma bursts out. The scent is much more intense than you’d expect from the dull, transparent liquid inside. Let’s take a sip.
The first impression is a “chemical grape flavor.” It feels like drinking a rich, artificially scented and sweet grape-flavored bubble gum.
Since it’s zero-calorie and zero-sugar, there's absolutely no taste of real grape fruit. It’s not a natural fruit flavor at all, but rather a fully artificial bubble gum grape taste.
The flavor is built entirely around synthetic grape aroma, and the taste itself is simply sweet—lacking any sourness or umami. It gives a somewhat cheap impression, reminiscent of sugar-free products from a decade ago.
On the flip side, if you enjoy those unhealthy and addictive chemical-style flavors, this will hit the spot. It can be seen as a throwback product that lets you experience the old-school chemical energy drink vibe.
Energy Ingredients of 5-hour ENERGY Drink Grape
Contains 230mg of caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone, phenylalanine, and acetyl-L-tyrosine—providing the same energy blend found in their energy shots.
Phenylalanine is a precursor to tyrosine, which in turn is used to produce neurotransmitters such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine.
Design of 5-hour ENERGY Drink Grape
This classic design simply enlarges the iconic energy shot packaging to a 473ml can. It’s immediately recognizable as a 5-hour ENERGY product.
One notable feature of the energy drink version is the fizz illustration in the orange section, indicating that it's carbonated.
The back of the can explains that by turning it into a carbonated drink, it not only provides a caffeine boost but also becomes a refreshing, hydrating beverage.
In the U.S., since 2020, stylish and modern energy drink brands from fitness supplement makers have seen explosive growth. Amidst this trend, it’s interesting that 5-hour ENERGY stuck with a classic design reminiscent of “those good old energy drinks.” It’s the kind of packaging that would catch anyone’s eye on store shelves.
However, the distribution of 5-hour ENERGY Drink is still quite limited.
It's rarely seen in most stores, and for now, it's mainly found in small, independently owned shops. We'll be watching closely to see how far the king of energy shots can expand into the energy drink market.
