Thums Up Charged Hương Kiwi
This is Thums Up Charged Hương Kiwi, part of the Thums Up Charged series released in Vietnam in June 2023. The flavor name literally translates to "Kiwi Flavor."

Thums Up is a cola brand that was created in 1977 as a substitute when Coca-Cola withdrew from India. It became so popular in India that it reached the No.1 market share among cola beverages. Today, Coca-Cola has reentered the Indian market, and Thums Up has been acquired by Coca-Cola.

The Thums Up Charged series is the energy drink line released by Thums Up specifically for the Vietnamese market.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 8,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Thums Up Charged Hương Kiwi

When I open the can, a sweet apple-like aroma bursts out. It doesn’t quite smell like kiwi, and the drink has a vibrant green color. Let’s give it a try.
Flavor of Thums Up Charged Hương Kiwi

On the first sip, a rich, sweet-and-tart apple syrup flavor fills my mouth. The characteristic sweetness and tartness of kiwi are barely noticeable, making it feel like drinking concentrated apple syrup.

Because the acidity and aroma typical of kiwi are weak, it’s hard to evaluate it as a true kiwi flavor. However, as an apple flavor, it is quite faithfully reproduced.

That said, the intense sweetness of the apple syrup can almost sting the throat, and the sugar’s effect on the esophagus is more noticeable than the sweetness in the mouth, causing significant heartburn.

The apple flavor itself is well captured, so if the sugar content were cut in half, it would likely be a perfectly balanced apple flavor.

In fact, Thums Up Charged Hương Kiwi contains about twice the sugar of a typical full-sugar energy drink. The description “double-concentrated apple syrup” is quite accurate, giving the sensation of drinking syrup concentrate.

It contains 96mg of caffeine. However, the sugar content is even more significant.

A 320ml can contains 61g of sugar, nearly double that of a typical full-sugar energy drink. In this slim 320ml can, you’re consuming more sugar than in a 500ml standard full-sugar drink.

As mentioned in the flavor review, this high sugar content causes noticeable heartburn with every sip.

The back of the can includes a QR code from a campaign held in 2023.

Since its release in 2023, the Thums Up Charged series has consisted of only these two flavors, and no new flavors have been added.

Energy drink brands in Southeast Asia rarely release many flavors, so a third flavor may not be expected anytime soon.
