This is a review of SEMTEX GRANÁTOVÉ JABLKO, a limited edition released in 2016.

The design is modeled after a hand grenade, and the flavor name cleverly plays on the Czech word for grenade, "GRANÁT", to represent "GRANÁTOVÉ JABLKO", which means pomegranate. It's a fun and unique concept—but how does it actually taste? Let’s find out.

Upon opening the can, a fruity aroma bursts out, reminiscent of sweet and tangy pomegranate, raspberry, and plum. The liquid inside has a reddish-brown hue typical of pomegranate. Let’s give it a try.

As I take a sip, a mildly sweet, juicy and tangy pomegranate flavor spreads across the palate.

The aftertaste leaves a refreshing impression, similar to bitter grapefruit, with just the right amount of bitterness lingering on the tongue.

There’s a subtle candy-like sweetness as well, and the acidity is nicely balanced, which I think helps bring out the best of the pomegranate flavor.

Perhaps due to the positive reception of this pomegranate flavor, what was initially released as a limited-edition product continued to be produced even after SEMTEX underwent a brand image renewal.

Contains 160mg of caffeine and 2000mg of taurine.

While I assumed it contained no fruit juice, it actually has 0.1% pomegranate juice. This small amount doesn’t noticeably affect the flavor, but it shows SEMTEX’s attention to detail in creating a product image that stands out.

The design is simple, featuring only the distinctive contours of a hand grenade.

There are no illustrations of fruits to represent the pomegranate flavor, but the way they cleverly play on the word “grenade (GRANÁT)” by adding a handwritten-style font to express “pomegranate (GRANÁTOVÉ JABLKO)” is unique and memorable.

Personally, I feel that incorporating a visual, like a pomegranate shaped like a hand grenade, could have made the flavor’s appeal more intuitive and engaging.

However, the SEMTEX series at that time adopted a unified, simple matte black design, so it probably wasn’t possible to include such flashy illustrations.

Balancing brand image with expressive design for each flavor can be quite a challenge.

Incidentally, this hand grenade motif was also effectively used in the commercial for SEMTEX GRANÁTOVÉ JABLKO.
