In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 8,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of BARK X TYPE ZERO
Upon opening, a sharp ginger aroma bursts out, stimulating the nasal membranes. Among the ginger-flavored drinks released in Japan in recent years, this one has particularly strong intensity... Hidden beneath the ginger, there’s also a chemical, soap-like scent. Let’s give it a taste.
As you take a sip, a dry ginger ale flavor spreads in the mouth, blending the spiciness of ginger with a lemon-lime tartness.
A unique aftertaste reminiscent of soap or detergent lingers, which may divide opinions...
There's barely any sweetness, making it a dry ginger & lemon-lime flavor rarely seen in Japanese energy drinks over the past decade.
Since most ginger-flavored energy drinks in Japan have been on the sweeter side, BARK X TYPE ZERO might be a perfect match for those who enjoy spicy and bold flavors. On the other hand, those who aren't fond of sharp ginger notes should probably steer clear of this one.
Energy Ingredients of BARK X TYPE ZERO
Contains 200mg of caffeine and 1000mg of arginine. With one of the highest caffeine contents available in Japan, it’s best to be cautious about consuming too much.
As the name "BARK X TYPE ZERO" suggests, it’s a zero-sugar drink.
Design of BARK X TYPE ZERO
A white can that reflects its zero-sugar identity, featuring a mirrored silver BARK logo and a mysterious black and green pattern with no clear meaning.
According to the press release, it’s themed around "an unknown life form X encountered by crew members who have landed on an extraterrestrial planet," expressing a world beyond human understanding.
Here’s the official image from Belc.
I see—so this black and green object must be the “unknown life form X.”
The BARK series often features designs whose concepts don’t seem to relate to the flavor, and even the product names have little connection to the actual taste.
That’s why, personally, I find it a bit hard to recall the flavor when I look back at the appearance of previous BARK drinks.
That said, the flavor name is clearly printed on the back of the can, so you can check it before buying. Beneath that, as usual with the BARK series, there’s an “energy poem”—a background story for the product written in English for some reason.
These curious and humorous elements are part of what makes the BARK series unique—and globally rare for a private brand energy drink.
