In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 8,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
FLYING POWER SUGAR FREE Flavor
Upon opening, the aroma is a familiar, classic scent like Red Bull’s. How does it differ from FLYING POWER 0%? Let’s give it a try.

When you take a sip, you get a flavor with no sweetness, but a distinct sourness and a light, classic flavor profile. It has a strong sour taste, characteristic of European-style sugar-free drinks that completely eliminate the sweetness of sugar.
Compared to FLYING POWER 0%, FLYING POWER SUGAR FREE has completely removed the sweetness and focuses entirely on the sourness, creating a classic European sugar-free experience.
There’s a distinction between sugar-free versions that have some sweetness and those that are completely sugar-free, but it’s unfortunate that this difference isn’t obvious from the packaging design or product name.
FLYING POWER SUGAR FREE Energy Ingredients

With 80mg of caffeine and 1000mg of taurine, this energy drink offers great cost performance, with the same energy composition as major brands, priced around 50 yen.
For those who don’t care about the brand, FLYING POWER is more than enough.
FLYING POWER SUGAR FREE Design

The combination of silver and gray gives off a strong sugar-free vibe. In the photos, it all looks like mirror-silver.
When compared side-by-side with the 0%, the silver-gray design stands out more as representing a sugar-free aesthetic.

However, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s different... Even when you look at the nutritional information, it’s difficult to guess the taste differences.
In European supermarkets, you often find two types of the same sugar-free drinks being sold at the same time (such as KONG STRONG), and generally, you can’t tell the difference by just looking at the appearance. The flavors are usually divided into sweet and unsweetened versions in the private-label (PB) series.
The pull tab is a silver tab that matches the can color.

The 0% version also has a black tab, and with the can color and pull tab matching the overall theme, it’s a budget-friendly PB energy drink priced around 50 yen.
In Japan, there are no private-label products at this level in terms of price, design, taste, and ingredients, so if you’re traveling to Europe, exploring supermarkets can be a lot of fun. Definitely check it out!
