PUNCH MONSTER BAD APPLE JAPAN

This is a review of Bad Apple, the latest addition to Monster’s juice-infused series, released on June 30, 2026.
Bad Apple was originally introduced as a Europe-exclusive flavor. It later made its way back to the original U.S. market, and has now finally been released in Japan as well.
One of its unique traits is that the flavor varies slightly by region. I’ll take a close look at what the Japanese version tastes like and explore the best way to enjoy it.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 8,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Monster Energy Bad Apple
The liquid has the same cloudy, rich, deep amber-brown color as the original European version. The aroma is subtle, but it gives off the impression of sweet apple flesh. Now, let me take a sip.

On the palate, it delivers a sweet-tart apple flavor with a pronounced acidity, followed by a natural aftertaste with a pleasant lingering sweetness.
At refrigerator temperature, it feels light and easy to drink. But as it gets closer to room temperature, the sweetness becomes more pronounced, and the fruit-derived flavor and aroma open up much more fully. Personally, I prefer sipping it slowly at a temperature closer to room temperature.
On the other hand, when served ice-cold over plenty of ice, it becomes lighter and more refreshing, but too much of the apple sweetness fades away, making it taste closer to a more ordinary apple flavor.

If I get the chance, comparing Bad Apple at room temperature with a chilled version could be an interesting experience. Which temperature do you prefer for drinking it?
Energy Ingredients of Monster Energy Bad Apple

Contains 142mg of caffeine, 185mg of arginine, 302mg of ginseng, and 11mg of carnitine.
The juice blend consists of apple, pear, kiwifruit, and sour cherry, totaling less than 10%. The composition is almost identical to overseas versions of Bad Apple.
Design of Monster Energy Bad Apple
The design takes a different approach from previous Monster Energy releases, featuring the Monster Energy logo prominently displayed on an outstretched apple.

Among Europe-origin flavors, including collaboration products, there have been several releases with designs that break away from Monster’s traditional style.
It is now also available in the original U.S. market, and this time it has arrived in Japan as well.

One distinctive feature of the Japanese release is the addition of the series label "PUNCH." Monster’s juice-based lineup uses labels such as "JUICE" in the U.S., "JUICED" in Europe, and "PUNCH" in some countries.
However, previous juice-infused Monster releases in Japan never carried this kind of series label.

That’s why I suspect the decision to specifically use "PUNCH" for Bad Apple was likely made not only to avoid potential labeling issues under Japan’s Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations (using PUNCH instead of JUICE), but also for design reasons.
The main image of a woman emerging from the black background creates an unsettling yet alluring atmosphere, enhanced by a gradient that deepens toward the bottom of the can.

The red series name further balances the overall red-and-black color scheme while also naturally separating the gradient section.
Without the red "PUNCH" label, the design likely would have felt less cohesive, as if it were simply an illustration printed on the can.
Limited-Edition Bad Apple Collector’s Box
I was also genuinely impressed by the gimmick of the limited-edition promotional box distributed before Bad Apple’s release.

This large apple. When I open it…

A mysterious-looking Bad Apple appears from inside.
It really makes me think, “How did they even come up with this?” The structure is three-dimensional and assembled in a somewhat unusual way, so it likely costs more to produce than a standard box. Still, this promotional box was a fantastic way to delight fans, and I’d love to see more ideas like this in the future.
