Being Busy with Energy Drinks...

The reason I haven’t been able to update the site much recently is that both work and personal life have been very busy, but a large part of my time has been taken up by exchanging information with energy drink enthusiasts from overseas (;´∀`). It’s not just casual chatting either, so it’s been hard to find the time. However, things should calm down a bit by the end of next month.

Recently, I’ve had the chance to meet energy drink enthusiasts from various countries, and when talking to them, it’s clear that Japan is not the only country lagging behind. However, it’s undeniable that Japan is still an energy drink laggard. (And I don’t mean just the lack of flavors!) Even though Red Bull has been in Japan for quite some time, the recent rise in popularity feels like a trend, but the chaotic state of energy drinks coming and going still persists, and I wouldn’t say that ‘energy drinks’ have truly taken root here. Most people still confuse them with nutritional drinks or energy boosters.

In the US, while carbonated drinks like cola are seeing a decline in sales, energy drinks are still rising in popularity, and there are frequent news reports about the large market size and new energy drink products being launched one after another in Japan, which makes it seem like energy drinks are becoming more popular. But is that really the case?

Thinking About Energy Drinks Collected by Top Collectors Around the World

I’ve been getting along well with energy drink enthusiasts primarily from the US and Europe. Many of them focus on collecting Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar, and Burn. While there are people interested in Japanese energy drinks, most don’t feel the need to collect them. These are the top-selling global brands, so it’s understandable, but those who love the world of energy drinks also understand the reasons behind the popularity of other brands.

There are other globally distributed drinks that are popular as well, and I plan to review them later, so please wait a little longer. I plan to review all flavors, including limited editions, of the major global energy drink brands ( ´∀`)bグッ!

What It Takes for Non-Major Brands to Establish Themselves...

In both Europe and the US, the major brands remain the most popular, and many energy drink brands fade away within two years. From what I’ve seen, there are many brands with great design sense but didn’t succeed. That’s why Japan is also seeing a trend of brands coming and going recently.

Energy drinks are not as simple as "they're popular right now, so people will buy them!" ((o(´∀`)o)). The reality is that many people buy a new one just to try it but won’t buy a second one.

The bigger issue, I think, is that the target market for energy drinks doesn’t really need them. People are already satisfied with major brands. This is a tough challenge (ヽ´ω`).

Right now, ReGain is trying to position itself as an energy drink that replaces nutritional drinks for office workers, but even if they change the target market, it seems almost impossible to topple the major brands. By the way, I’m not sure if ReGain Energy Drink is really being accepted and selling well. I assume it’s doing well based on the large number of cans I see in vending machines.

There’s also the female target market, but the cosmetic, supplement, and health product market for women is really impressive. It seems like the purchasing demographic is well-researched, and the market itself is pretty well established. Would an energy drink fit into that market? A mild flavor with beauty ingredients might appeal, but really? If I wanted something like that, I’d go for a placenta drink instead...

Anyway, I just wrote down some of my recent thoughts about energy drinks. Right now, I don’t have time to publish reviews or in-depth articles, but I’ve been posting on social media.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
