Released in February 2025, this is a review of MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA BLUE HAWAIIAN from the MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA series, a now-mainstream lineup of sugar-free drinks.

With its tropical Hawaiian and Polynesian imagery, you might already have an idea of its flavor. I also received a sample version, so I’d like to compare it with the final product.

When I opened the can, a refreshing tropical fruit mix aroma burst out. The flavoring is subtle and not overpowering, and the liquid has a pale blue color similar to Ultra Blue. Let's give it a try.

As I took a sip, a juicy and refreshing taste spread across my mouth, featuring sweet and tangy pineapple and papaya as the main flavors, along with hints of lime and mixed berries typical of a zero-sugar drink.

The aftertaste is subtle, with a gentle finish of juicy apple and pear flavors. Overall, it feels like a light, sugar-free tropical fruit flavor.

As suggested by its abstract name, ULTRA BLUE HAWAIIAN is not meant to replicate the taste of specific fruits but rather provides an image-based flavor that evokes a "generally tropical" sensation.

ULTRA BLUE HAWAIIAN can be considered in the same category as the early Ultra series drinks such as Zero Ultra, Ultra Blue, Ultra Red, and Ultra Rosa, which offer a "not a distinct flavor, but enjoyable and non-tiring" experience.

Comparing with the Sales Sample

I brought a pre-release sales sample from the U.S. to compare it with the final product. The left is the final version, and the right is the sales sample.

The color inside is the same for both, so it seems there were no visual changes before the official release. Let's taste them.

The flavors are almost identical, with no major differences, but the sales sample has a lighter sweetness and a stronger presence of the unique Monster Ultra series taste. The juicy pineapple and apple notes are less pronounced than in the final product.

When drinking both side by side, the sales sample's tropical fruit flavor doesn't linger as much in the aftertaste, giving an impression of a sugar-free, fruitless, ice candy-like artificial tropical fruit flavor. The lack of depth is somewhat masked by the signature Monster Ultra series taste.

On the other hand, the final product immediately presents pineapple flavor along with a subtle, lingering apple fruit note. Of course, the signature Monster Ultra taste is still there, but it feels like they've added depth to emphasize the tropical fruit deliciousness even more.

Had the official product retained the sales sample flavor as-is, it would still have had the enjoyable Monster Ultra taste but would have lacked the richness of tropical fruit flavor.

With light blue as the main color, it gives a similar impression to the existing Ultra Blue product.

On the side of the can, there are illustrations inspired by Hawaiian Polynesian culture, including a tiki and a hula dancer.

Compared to the sales sample, the illustrations and design are almost entirely carried over to the final product.

Additionally, the final product adds a darker blue, giving the overall design more contrast.

Some elements present only in the sales sample were removed in the final product.

For example, the decorative pattern at the bottom of the sales sample can was removed, likely to improve the visibility of the product name.

Also, the mirrored silver fruit slice illustration on the right side of the sales sample can was removed in the final version.

Since ULTRA BLUE HAWAIIAN does not replicate a specific flavor and its taste perception varies slightly from person to person, they may have avoided illustrations that suggest particular fruits.
