This is a review of "ROCKSTAR PUNCHED ELECTRIC BERRY", one of the two "Limited Edition" flavors from the ROCKSTAR PUNCHED series that were released in limited quantities in Canada in September 2024.

The retro, classic design immediately stands out and makes it hard to resist picking it up.

For Rockstar, which has struggled with inconsistent design choices and seen its market share decline over the past few years, this release can be described as a limited-edition product that left a quiet but notable impact in Canada. As soon as I open the can, a rich and realistic mixed berry aroma bursts out. Based on the can color and design, I was expecting an artificial, blue-raspberry-like scent, but in reality, the impression is much closer to real fruit. Let’s take a sip.

As I take it into my mouth, a sweet berry mix syrup-like flavor spreads across the palate. Although it is carbonated, the stimulation is so mild that it almost feels non-carbonated.

Contrary to the impression from the aroma, the taste itself lacks any sense of real fruit. The artificial sweetness is intense, and with very little acidic accent, the berry flavor feels flat overall. Finishing even a single glass feels tough... that’s the impression. If the carbonation were stronger, it likely would have been much more refreshing and easier to drink.

So, I tried adding plenty of ice. The overpowering sweetness disappears, transforming the flavor into something closer to a non-carbonated grape drink, resulting in a dramatically cleaner drinking experience.

As it becomes ice-cold, my sense of taste dulls slightly, and as the ice melts, the cloying sweetness is diluted. Together, these effects bring the flavor to a clean and well-balanced level. Drinking ROCKSTAR PUNCHED ELECTRIC BERRY with ice can be considered the optimal way to enjoy it.

165 mg of caffeine, 65 mg of taurine, with ginseng and guarana included.

As expected from the sugar-heavy ROCKSTAR PUNCHED series, this 473 ml can contains a staggering 68 g of sugar, so excessive sugar intake is definitely something to be cautious about.

The retro game-style design features pixel-art illustrations of raspberries, cranberries, and blueberries that immediately catch the eye. It is an approach never seen before in the Rockstar lineup and is instantly captivating.

In 2024, when sugar-free options are becoming the standard, releasing a sugar-loaded ROCKSTAR PUNCHED series with this retro design may be an intentional nod to the spirit of "energy drinks from back in the day".

Starting in 2024, the Canadian Rockstar lineup slightly reduced the size of the star logo, allowing the flavor name to be placed on the front. While the change is subtle, it finally feels like the product design has returned to a more standard and balanced state.

This design shift happened simultaneously in Europe, and later, with a slight delay, the U.S. lineup also transitioned to designs where the flavor name appears on the front. If only the brand name were placed front and center, it would be perfect.

This retro game series was released in two flavors, red and blue. The adorable design makes it almost impossible not to buy when you see it. Both are limited-edition releases.
